Severe weather conditions have left multiple residents in the Omaha metro area without power as the region experiences storms and outages. As of Tuesday morning, the Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) reported a peak of more than 13,400 total outages at 7:40 a.m. However, as of 12:20 p.m., that number had decreased to approximately 2,900.
Douglas County was heavily impacted, with over 2,700 outages still being addressed by repair crews. Sarpy County reported 21 outages, while Saunders County dealt with 22 outages. By 1:50 p.m., the total number of people without power across multiple counties stood at 5,839. The breakdown of affected areas includes:
- Douglas County: 4,627 outages
- Sarpy County: 26 outages
- Washington County: 1,017 outages
- Saunders County: 25 outages
- Cass County: 1 outage
- Dodge County: 143 outages
OPPD has issued a warning to the community to exercise caution when dealing with floodwaters and storm debris. In a blog post, the district emphasized that their crews are actively working to restore power to customers affected by the outages. However, no estimated restoration times were provided.
Residents are urged to refer to the outage map provided by OPPD to identify areas impacted by the power outages. Meanwhile, MidAmerican Energy reported nearly 1,000 outages in the Council Bluffs area during the early hours of Tuesday morning. However, by 12:20 p.m., that number had decreased to only 92.
OPPD has advised the public to remain cautious around storm debris and floodwaters. They have specifically called attention to the potential danger of fallen tree limbs or branches touching power lines and have requested that individuals avoid approaching downed power lines, treating them as live wires instead. Any encounters with downed power lines should be immediately reported to emergency services by calling 911.
As residents in the Omaha metro area contend with power outages caused by severe weather, both OPPD and MidAmerican Energy continue their efforts to restore power, reminding the community to prioritize safety and vigilance during this time.
