A newly released report from Senator Elizabeth Warren’s office lays out numerous allegations against Elon Musk, claiming he leveraged his position in the Trump administration to further his personal business interests. The 14-page report outlines more than 100 instances where the Massachusetts Democrat's office believes Musk, as a “special government employee” overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), engaged in conduct that raises concerns about ethics, corruption, and conflicts of interest.
During his 130 days in the Trump administration, Musk allegedly promoted his companies, Tesla and SpaceX, through questionable means. The report highlights instances such as the transformation of the White House lawn into a temporary Tesla showroom and efforts to secure lucrative contracts for Musk's enterprises, like Customs and Border Protection exploring the use of Starlink technology.
The accusations extend to enforcement actions—or the lack thereof—against Musk’s companies. The report details occasions when federal agencies either terminated or paused investigations, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration closing an inquiry into Tesla's alleged workplace safety violations.
Sen. Warren’s team also points out that Musk’s tenure resulted in unprecedented disruptions within the federal workforce and agencies. His role was marked by aggressive moves to cut federal spending, which some argue benefited his companies directly or indirectly.
Despite serious allegations, the White House did not provide a comment, nor did Musk or his representatives respond to requests from CNBC for their take on the report. Musk ended his official duties with the government last week, closing a tumultuous chapter as the head of DOGE.
Warren's office argues that the billionaire used his federal position to promote his ventures extensively. Beyond American government contracts, Musk's companies have won attention internationally, with foreign governments and other private sectors showing interest.
The report concludes by noting the overlap of business and government during Musk’s short-lived government tenure as a considerable concern. The scrutiny over potential conflicts of interest extends beyond this report, as three Democratic senators recently urged the Justice Department to investigate whether DOGE employees profited unlawfully from these alleged dealings.
