### Senator George Helmy: A Proactive Short-Term Senator Making Waves in Washington
Senator George Helmy, a New Jersey Democrat, is making his short-lived term in the U.S. Senate notably impactful. Appointed by Gov. Phil Murphy to replace the ousted Sen. Bob Menendez, Helmy embarked on his tenure with an intense schedule. On his first Monday, he delivered a complex speech about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, grounded in insights from a recent Middle Eastern trip.
The very next day, Helmy joined forces with Alabama Republican Sen. Katie Britt to support bills aimed at controlling social media companies for the sake of children's mental health. Despite differing political stances, Britt praised Helmy's swift and dedicated start, noting, "This man got to work before Day 1."
Sworn in on September 9, Helmy's brief tenure is expected to end soon after election results confirm Rep. Andy Kim to serve the remainder of Menendez's term. According to the Senate Historical Office, Helmy will serve roughly 12 weeks, making his term one of the shortest since direct senatorial elections began in 1913. However, his busy agenda defies the notion of a placeholder senator.
In nearly three months, Helmy has met with about 30 Senate colleagues and either sponsored or co-sponsored over 30 pieces of legislation. His focus has spanned a wide array of issues from public housing in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to the plight of refugees in Gaza. Moreover, his time included a trip to Jordan where he witnessed dire humanitarian conditions firsthand.
"Being one of 100 requires you to raise your voice," Helmy stated in an interview after his Senate speech on Gaza. His colleagues have applauded his vocal commitment to complex issues, with some sending him supportive texts immediately following his address.
Helmy’s efforts are reminiscent of other short-term senators who made lasting contributions. For instance, former Sen. Carte Goodwin of West Virginia helped pass significant legislation and confirm a Supreme Court Justice during his brief term. Helmy is determined to leave a similar legislative mark.
Notably, Helmy is currently the sole Arab-American senator. His speech on Gaza acknowledged the intricacies of the conflict by supporting Israel's right to exist and defend itself while condemning blockades that hinder humanitarian aid. His nuanced stance drew immediate positive reactions from fellow senators.
Helmy’s agenda-driven approach is backed by a proficient team of staffers from Sen. Bob Menendez’s office, former Sen. Harry Reid's team, and Gov. Murphy's office. Known for his competence and dedication as Murphy's chief of staff, and previously as state director for Sen. Cory Booker, Helmy is leveraging his expertise and connections to maximize his impact in Washington.
"I prefer being the guy behind the guy or gal," Helmy admitted, while embracing his temporary senatorial role. His willingness to engage with any and all stakeholders continues to define his proactive, albeit short, tenure.
