In a stunning revelation, the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Dick Durbin, disclosed on Thursday that a subpoena of conservative donor Harlan Crow has uncovered additional travel and gifts received by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, which had not been previously disclosed.
According to the subpoena, it was discovered that in May 2017, Justice Thomas had taken a private jet from St. Louis to Kalispell, Mont., and then a return flight to Dallas. And in March 2019, he had flown on a private jet from Washington, D.C., to Savannah, Ga., and back. Adding to the list, in June 2021, Thomas had traveled from Washington, D.C., to San Jose, Calif., and returned.
The newly obtained documents also shed light on Justice Thomas' travel in July 2019, where he took a private jet for a trip to Indonesia, as well as an eight-day yacht excursion during his time there. The documents further revealed that Thomas had also utilized a private jet for a trip to Santa Rosa, California, during the same period.
These undisclosed travel details have raised concerns regarding Justice Thomas' financial disclosure report. Durbin's statement emphasized that the dates provided by Crow's documents for the July 2019 Indonesia trip differ from those disclosed by Thomas himself, which raises doubts about the accuracy of the justice's reported information.
Last week, Justice Thomas had admitted to travel expenses being paid for by Harlan Crow in his annual financial disclosure. In the wake of these revelations, public trust in the Supreme Court has wavered. The court, facing mounting pressure from Congress and the public, implemented its first-ever ethics code in November 2020. However, the code lacks an enforcement mechanism, leaving critics questioning its effectiveness.
Justice Thomas' undisclosed gifts and travel have become the center of controversy, with Justice Samuel Alito also coming under scrutiny for failing to disclose a fishing trip with Republican donor Paul Singer, who had cases before the Supreme Court. Additionally, Alito has faced criticism for flying flags associated with pro-Trump activists outside his properties.
As the scrutiny on the Supreme Court intensifies, the country awaits further clarifications from Justice Thomas and the court regarding the undisclosed travel and compliance with financial disclosure requirements.
