In a turn of events, Senate Democrats have reportedly scrapped a planned meeting to discuss President Joe Biden's path forward in his reelection campaign. The meeting, proposed by Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, was intended to address concerns following Biden's lackluster debate performance against former president Donald Trump. However, the details of the meeting were leaked to the media, leading to its cancellation, according to sources familiar with Warner's thinking, as reported by Axios and CNN.
During the debate on June 27, Biden struggled to complete sentences and respond to basic questions about his campaign, raising fresh concerns about the 81-year-old's age and ability to serve another four-year term as president. While some Democrats publicly voiced support for Biden, others have called for him to step aside and allow another candidate to face Trump in the upcoming November election.
Biden, in his bid to salvage his candidacy, recently spoke with ABC's George Stephanopoulos in an interview. He acknowledged his "bad episode" during the debate but maintained that there was no indication of a "more serious condition." Defiantly, Biden stated, "I'm not letting one 90-minute debate wipe out three-and-a-half years of work. I'm staying in the race, and I will beat Donald Trump."
However, when pressed on the idea of taking an independent medical evaluation to reassure voters of his capabilities, Biden rejected the notion, claiming, "I have a cognitive test every single day. Every day, I have that test. Everything I do. You know, not only am I campaigning, but I'm running the world."
The calls for Biden to withdraw from the race have gained momentum, with five House Democrats publicly urging him to drop out. Meanwhile, several Democratic senators have remained silent on the matter. On Sunday, during a private call convened by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Representatives Adam Smith of Washington, Jerry Nadler of New York, Mark Takano of California, and Joe Morelle of New York reportedly urged Biden to withdraw, as per Politico and The New York Times.
As scrutiny over Biden's performance and fitness for office intensifies, the cancellation of the Senate Democrats' meeting indicates potential divisions within the party. It remains to be seen how Biden will navigate the challenges ahead and maintain support from fellow Democrats leading up to the November election.
