In a recording reported by CNN on Tuesday, Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina launched a scathing attack on Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, stating that she is a danger to the Republican Party and is "dragging our brand down." Tillis accused Greene of being uninformed and claimed that she is a total waste of time.
Tillis' comments come in the wake of Greene's criticism of the House's recent passing of a long-stalled foreign aid bill. The Senate approved the $95 billion bill on Tuesday, and it was subsequently signed into law by President Joe Biden on Wednesday. The legislation includes crucial aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, as well as provisions that could potentially lead to a national ban on the popular video-sharing app TikTok.
The bill designates $60 billion in aid to Ukraine, $26 billion for Israel and humanitarian support in Gaza. Additionally, $8 billion is allocated for security in Taiwan and the broader Indo-Pacific region. As part of the legislation, TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, is given a nine-month window to sell the platform or face a ban in the United States, with the possibility of an extension given by President Biden.
Greene, who has been a vocal critic of providing further aid to Ukraine, has been particularly vocal in her disdain for Speaker Mike Johnson, referring to him as a "traitor to our country." Greene even introduced a motion to remove him as the speaker for his role in advancing the funding. However, Greene has not responded to Sen. Tillis' criticism at the time of this report.
In a post on social media following the House's passage of the foreign aid bill, Greene expressed her disappointment with her fellow Republicans, singling out those who voted against her amendment to strip funding from the bill. She called for a new Speaker of the House, stating that House Republicans and the American people would be better off without Johnson's "disloyalty and betrayal of his principles."
Speaker Johnson defended his actions, affirming that he allowed the House to work freely and will continue to "do the right thing." He emphasized that it is important to let the chips fall where they may.
Sen. Tillis' criticism of Rep. Greene underscores the deep divisions within the Republican Party regarding foreign aid and internal leadership. As the party faces challenges in regaining a majority, individual differences continue to raise concerns about the party's unity and future direction.
