In the wake of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania, new revelations have emerged regarding significant security failures that allowed the gunman to open fire unchecked. Police body-camera footage, released in response to a public records request by CNN, sheds light on the frustration and anger expressed by local law enforcement officers over the lack of security measures in place during the incident.
According to the footage, a local police officer had warned the Secret Service days before the event that the building where the 20-year-old gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire needed to be secured. The officer can be heard stating, "I told them they needed to post guys over here... I told them that Tuesday." It was further revealed that Crooks had previously been flagged as suspicious by the police before the shooting took place.
The body-camera videos also highlight the confusion and anger among law enforcement officers over the absence of any law enforcement personnel stationed on the roof where the gunman gained access. One officer expresses disbelief, stating, "I wasn't even concerned about it because I thought someone was on the roof." The other officer responds, "They were inside."
The incident has sparked several investigations into the security failures that allowed Crooks to slip away from law enforcement and carry out the attack with an AR-style rifle. Acting Secret Service director Ronald Rowe Jr, who assumed the position after the resignation of former chief Kimberly Cheatle, admitted that he cannot defend the lack of security on the roof. The Secret Service, responsible for securing the area after individuals pass through metal detectors, had relied on local law enforcement to handle the perimeter.
In response to the body-camera footage, a Secret Service spokesperson stated that the agency is reviewing the incident. The spokesperson further acknowledged the failure, calling it a "US Secret Service failure" and expressing the agency's commitment to reviewing and updating their protective policies and procedures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The footage also captures the chaos that ensued after the shots were fired, with law enforcement officers calling out to each other, desperately seeking information on the shooter's whereabouts. The incident ended with government snipers eliminating Crooks on the rooftop.
The revelations from the body-camera footage provide valuable insight into the lapses in security that allowed the attempted assassination to occur. As investigations continue, authorities are under pressure to address these failures and implement necessary reforms to prevent such incidents from happening again.
