### Sectarian Clashes in Northwestern Pakistan Leave 37 Dead, 25 Injured

In the latest bout of sectarian violence in northwestern Pakistan, clashes between armed Sunni and Shiite groups have resulted in the deaths of at least 37 individuals and left 25 others wounded. This was confirmed by a senior police officer from the region on Saturday.

The violence erupted overnight in Kurram, a district located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, adding to the turbulent history of the area. Just days prior, an ambush incident had claimed 42 lives. Pakistan’s 240 million-strong population is predominantly Sunni, with Shiite Muslims comprising about 15%. Although both communities usually coexist peacefully, Kurram has frequently witnessed inter-sectarian tension.

Saleem Shah, the station house police officer in Kurram, reported that armed groups in the areas of Bagan and Bacha Kot had set ablaze several shops, homes, and government buildings. Intense exchanges of gunfire were reported between the Alizai and Bagan tribes in Lower Kurram, with both factions using heavy and automatic weaponry.

"The situation has forced the closure of educational institutions in Kurram," said Shah. "Both sides are relentlessly targeting each other."

In an effort to mediate and de-escalate the situation, a delegation from the government arrived in Parachinar on Saturday. The provincial government spokesman, Muhammad Ali Saif, revealed that meetings had been held with tribal elders to seek a resolution.

"Productive discussions took place with Shiite leaders to address the core issues," Saif told the media. "The next step involves discussions with Sunni leaders. Achieving a cease-fire and establishing lasting peace is our top priority."

The recent clashes are the culmination of a flare-up in violence dating back to July, when a land dispute in Kurram spiraled into broader sectarian conflict. The ongoing violence has claimed numerous lives from both Sunni and Shiite communities.
