In the aftermath of a second apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump, the acting director of the Secret Service, Ronald L. Rowe Jr., has recommended significant additional security arrangements and planning for Trump's golfing activities. The recommendation was made during a meeting between Rowe and Trump at Mar-a-Lago, Trump's private club and residence in Palm Beach, Florida.
Rowe highlighted the challenges of securing sprawling golf courses located near public roads, emphasizing the need for enhanced protective measures. Some of Trump's courses were deemed easier to secure than others, considering factors like their proximity to public spaces and the potential for long-range lenses used by photographers to capture Trump's presence on the golf courses.
The meeting between Rowe and Trump took place just 24 hours after the second attempted assassination on the former president within two months. Tensions had been escalating between the Trump campaign and the Secret Service prior to the incident. Trump sought assurance from Rowe regarding the safety of his golfing activities.
However, concerns were raised within Trump's circle, questioning why President Joe Biden could visit open beaches while Trump might have to curtail his golfing, especially considering that other former presidents regularly play the sport. It's important to note that Trump's level of Secret Service protection has been reduced since leaving the White House, but lawmakers from both parties have expressed concerns about his safety in light of recent threats. President Biden has urged the Secret Service to allocate additional resources to ensure Trump's safety.
Golf holds significant importance for Trump, serving as a major part of his identity, a way of socializing, and a release valve amidst his ongoing legal troubles and the presidential campaign. However, given the current intensity of threats and Trump's busy campaign schedule approaching the November election, it remains unclear how much golf he will be able to play in the final 49 days.
The latest assassination attempt, perpetrated by Ryan W. Routh near the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, resulted in his subsequent arrest. Law enforcement officials discovered a semiautomatic rifle, a scope, two backpacks, and a GoPro camera, indicating Routh's intention to film a shooting. The swift action of a Secret Service agent prevented a tragedy, highlighting the importance of increased security measures.
Rowe conveyed to Trump that securing his expansive golf courses posed difficulties due to their open spaces and proximity to public roads. He mentioned that the Secret Service perceives the golf course at Joint Base Andrews, a military course frequently used by former President Barack Obama, as easier to secure. The meeting concluded without a clear indication of how Trump will adjust his golf schedule moving forward.
Campaign spokeswoman Danielle Alvarez declined to comment on the private briefing held on Monday. Trump, on social media, expressed his appreciation for the Secret Service and law enforcement, emphasizing the outstanding work they had done. While Trump continues to praise his personal detail, his team has expressed frustration over the alleged lack of resources provided by the Secret Service.
During a private call between Trump and President Biden, discussions revolved around the recent concerning incidents affecting Trump's security. Biden affirmed his commitment to allocating necessary resources, but emphasized the requirement for additional congressional funding to meet those needs.
Trump's golfing ventures extend across various locations, including multiple courses in Florida, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Scotland, Ireland, and the Middle East. Aides have described golf as a crucial means of relaxation for him, with his golf courses serving as a steady source of income.
After the first assassination attempt in July, Trump disregarded Secret Service concerns and continued playing golf. The Secret Service faced criticism over security lapses during the July incident, prompting a renewed focus on ensuring the former president's safety during his golfing activities.
While it remains uncertain how Trump will adapt his golfing routine amidst heightened security concerns, the Secret Service's recommendation underscores the importance of prioritizing safety measures for the former president's recreational pursuits.
