In a shocking turn of events, Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle has resigned following security failures surrounding the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The incident, which took place at an outdoor rally in Pennsylvania, was captured on bodycam footage recently released to the public.
The footage shows Secret Service and local law enforcement officers near the lifeless body of the gunman, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. In the video, a trail of blood can be seen near Crooks' body, who managed to fire shots at Trump from a rooftop overlooking the rally.
The video, which was posted on X by the office of Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, also captures conversations between the officers. One Secret Service agent can be heard referring to the deceased shooter's body, stating, "A Beaver County sniper seen and sent the pictures out, this is him." Discussion also arises regarding the origin of the photos and the presence of an abandoned bike found in the area.
The newly emerged footage led to increased scrutiny on the security preparations leading up to the rally. Senator Grassley, along with other members of Congress, is demanding a thorough investigation into the incident. During a House of Representatives Oversight Committee hearing, Cheatle took responsibility for the security lapses but pushed back on calls to resign. She labeled the shooting as "the most significant operational failure at the Secret Service in decades."
Witnesses reported seeing the suspect, Crooks, on a rooftop with a rifle just moments before shots were fired. However, he was swiftly neutralized by a counter-sniper after getting off a volley of shots. Former President Trump sustained an injury to his right ear and described feeling the bullet "ripping through the skin" as protection officers rushed him away. Blood was visible on his face during the chaotic scene.
In a letter sent to staff on Tuesday night, Cheatle officially resigned, taking "full responsibility for the security lapses" as director. The resignation comes at a time when tensions between Israeli leaders and leading US Democrats have grown tense, adding further complexity to the current political landscape.
As the investigation into the attempted assassination continues, the nation awaits answers regarding the security failures that allowed such an incident to occur.
