The Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas praised the Secret Service's "phenomenal work" in their response to an apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Mayorkas emphasized that the level of security provided to Trump is now comparable to that given to President Joe Biden.
During a panel discussion, Senator Mike Rounds echoed the sentiment, calling the Secret Service's response a "victory." He commended their proactive measures, acknowledging that they apprehended the suspect in advance.
Mayorkas also highlighted the current heightened threat environment, where public officials on the federal, state, and local levels face increased risks. He mentioned the growing threats against places of worship and schools, as well as individuals radicalized by hate ideologies and anti-government sentiments propagated online.
The recent incident involving Trump, as identified by the FBI, was an attempted assassination by suspect Ryan Wesley Routh. Routh allegedly waited outside Trump's West Palm Beach golf course for nearly 12 hours, armed with an assault rifle. While Trump was playing golf, the Secret Service intervened and fired upon Routh. He was subsequently charged with gun-related crimes.
The incident has drawn attention to the Secret Service's effectiveness in protecting the nation's top elected officials and presidential candidates. Experts have called it a "failure," raising concerns about the agency's ability to prevent such attempts. This comes in the wake of a previous assassination attempt on Trump during an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where security lapses allowed shots to be fired, grazing the former president's ear.
The House has initiated an investigation into the Secret Service's response to the first assassination attempt, which is expected to expand with this recent incident. President Biden has acknowledged that the agency requires additional support.
