In a significant development, Saudi Arabia has reportedly publicly acknowledged its involvement in defending Israel from a massive attack launched by the Islamic Republic of Iran over the weekend. The joint defense effort by the U.S., U.K., France, Jordan, U.A.E., and Saudi Arabia successfully repelled more than 300 missiles and drones targeting Israel.
According to a source from the Saudi royal family, the nation played a crucial role in intercepting Iranian attack drones bound for Israel. The source highlighted that Saudi Arabian airspace automatically detects and intercepts any suspicious entity. These statements were featured on the royal family's website and were brought to attention by The Jerusalem Post.
The post on the royal family's website also accused Iran of instigating the recent attack by pushing Hamas to launch an offensive on October 7. It claimed that Iran's intention was to disrupt the progress made by Israel and Saudi Arabia in normalizing relations. The royal family condemned Iran, describing it as a nation endorsing terrorism and stating that the world should have taken action against it earlier.
The scale of the Iranian attack was described as unprecedented. The Wall Street Journal reported that it was one of the largest missile and drone barrages in modern history. Comparatively, the report highlighted that during Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a country twenty times larger than Israel, it only fired up to 200 missiles and drones.
Jonathan Schanzer, a senior vice president of research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) in Washington, stated that Iran was testing the missile-defense systems and the resolve of regional countries as well as the United States. He stressed the potential risks involved when two powerful parties engage in direct hostility, emphasizing the unknown outcome of such a situation.
Amidst these heightened tensions, Israel is expected to retaliate against Iran. With an array of options at its disposal, including cyberattacks, military strikes, elimination of key figures, and covert operations, Israel holds the capability to respond effectively.
As the region sits on the brink of a potential escalation, the world watches closely, aware of the unpredictable nature of conflict between two powerful adversaries. The implications of this recent attack and its aftermath remain uncertain, but a swift response from Israel seems imminent.
