### Southern California Man Accused of Threatening to Kill President Trump on Facebook
Federal prosecutors have charged Thomas Eugene Streavel, a 73-year-old resident of San Bernardino County, with allegedly posting threats to assassinate President Trump on Facebook following last year's election. These charges were outlined in an indictment filed last week, the Department of Justice disclosed in a statement on Tuesday.
The unsealed indictment accuses Streavel of writing several inflammatory messages both prior to and following the election, expressing a desire for President Trump to be killed. The charges zero in on three specific messages purportedly posted in November.
Streavel was apprehended on Monday and appeared in court for his arraignment on Tuesday, where he pled not guilty. He has since been released on a $10,000 bond, according to the Justice Department. The Secret Service is currently conducting an investigation into the threats. Streavel's legal representation was not listed in the federal court database.
Attorney General Pam Bondi released a statement affirming the gravity of the situation, noting that President Trump has already survived two attempts on his life. The President was previously targeted by a shooter in July at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and again in September at his Florida golf club.
Under federal law, making threats against the president or president-elect carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, although actual sentencing is at the judge’s discretion and often results in lesser penalties. The Justice Department has frequently prosecuted individuals for threats against President Trump, former President Joe Biden, and other high-profile officials. Additionally, authorities report an increase in threats against various officials, including members of Congress, judges, and prosecutors.
In a related development, a Romanian man admitted guilt on Monday to orchestrating a series of bomb threats and false emergency reports targeting numerous members of Congress and a former president.
