In a recent development, members of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) have voted overwhelmingly in favor of a strike authorization against 10 video game companies. The decision comes following lengthy negotiations that began in October 2022.

The vote, which took place in September 2023, saw an overwhelming 98.32% majority in favor of a strike authorization. Although the vote does not immediately initiate a strike, it allows the union's national board to declare a strike if negotiations fail to yield satisfactory results.

The main point of contention revolves around the issue of AI language protection for performers covered by the contract. SAG-AFTRA asserts that while agreements have been reached on numerous important matters, the video game companies have refused to provide clear and enforceable language that guarantees the protection of all performers in relation to AI language.

SAG-AFTRA had previously signed an agreement with Replica Studios, an AI voiceover studio, in January 2023. This agreement sets terms for the use of artificial intelligence for voices in video games and includes provisions for informed consent and the safe storage of digital assets. The union believes that this deal will enable Replica Studios to engage SAG-AFTRA members under a fair and ethical agreement, allowing them to create and license digital replicas of their voices for use in video game development and other interactive media projects.

However, concerns have been raised by some voice actors regarding the agreement and the process by which it was reached. Despite this, SAG-AFTRA remains committed to securing fair conditions and protections for its members.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time SAG-AFTRA has engaged in a strike against major gaming companies. Back in 2016, the union launched a strike that lasted a whopping 183 days. Similarly, the Writers Guild of America also went on strike in May 2023, demanding improved pay, working conditions, and limitations on the industry's use of AI. The WGA recently reached a tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers in September 2023.

The issue of AI language protection is becoming increasingly relevant, as demonstrated by the role it played in the SAG-AFTRA strike from July to November 2023 against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. SAG-AFTRA, which represents over 160,000 performers, including voice actors, negotiates contracts with studios to ensure fair pay, working conditions, contributions towards health insurance and pension, and preferential casting for union members.

As negotiations continue, both SAG-AFTRA and the video game companies will need to find common ground to address the concerns raised by the performers and to ensure a mutually beneficial agreement that protects the rights and interests of all parties involved.
