In a recent turn of events, SAG-AFTRA has initiated a strike against League of Legends, citing a breach of labor law by a company involved in producing the game. The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has denounced Formosa Interactive LLC for purportedly attempting to circumvent the ongoing video game strike. According to SAG-AFTRA's statement, Formosa allegedly engaged in actions that the union described as "egregious violations of core tenets of labor law."

The tension escalated when Formosa was accused of allegedly transferring a struck video game to a shell company after being unable to cancel it post-strike initiation, subsequently seeking non-union talent. This move prompted SAG-AFTRA to take action by filing an unfair labor practice charge against Formosa with the National Labor Relations Board. As a result, the National Executive Director of SAG-AFTRA has called for a strike against League of Legends, demanding all union members to discontinue providing any services covered by the union for the popular title.

League of Legends' publisher, Riot Games, issued a statement distancing itself from the allegations directed at Formosa, asserting that since League of Legends became a union project five years ago, the company had consistently collaborated with union performers as per the union's requirements in the US. Riot clarified that the controversy surrounding Formosa pertained to a non-Riot game and emphasized that League of Legends had no involvement in the contentious issues raised by SAG-AFTRA against Formosa.

SAG-AFTRA initiated the video game strike in July to advocate for enhanced regulations concerning generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in gaming projects. The union disclosed that Formosa was among the companies in the bargaining group refusing to align with the actors on safeguarding their rights against unethical usage of A.I. Amidst the ongoing strike, there was a glimmer of progress as Lightspeed LA, developer of Last Sentinel, signed SAG-AFTRA's agreement, promising improved rights for actors and safeguards against artificial intelligence. Subsequently, 80 games adhered to the union's agreements, showcasing a mutual understanding of fair terms and A.I. protections.
