In the lead-up to the highly anticipated Copa America final between Argentina and Colombia, both teams have expressed concerns over safety following a recent brawl that took place during the semifinals. The incident involved Uruguay's Darwin Núñez and his teammates, who went into the stands after their defeat to Colombia.

Argentina's coach, Lionel Scaloni, voiced his worry during a news conference on Saturday, stating, "I'm concerned about what could happen tomorrow." He emphasized the need for improved security measures as his team aims for a record 16th Copa America title against Colombia.

The altercation occurred on Wednesday immediately after the match's final whistle, when Núñez and his teammates ventured into the crowd. Video footage showed Núñez striking a fan wearing Colombian team colors. Uruguay captain José Giménez later explained that the players went into the stands to protect their families. Coach Marcelo Bielsa criticized tournament organizers for not adequately safeguarding the families of players seated behind the Uruguay bench. It took more than 10 minutes for the police to arrive and restore order.

The incident has raised concerns among both the Argentina and Colombia teams, prompting calls for reinforced security measures during the final. Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a safe environment for the players and spectators.

CONMEBOL, the governing body of South American soccer, condemned the violence in a news release the day after the match. While expressing their dissatisfaction, the organization did not specifically address potential security concerns or any changes that may be implemented.

With both Argentina and Colombia known for their passionate fan bases, the 44th meeting between the two teams is expected to draw a crowd of over 65,000 people. Resale ticket prices have skyrocketed, ranging from a couple thousand dollars to over $10,000.

Despite the concerns, Coach Scaloni stressed that the Copa America final should be a celebration and urged fans to respect their rivals. However, he acknowledged the difficulties faced by players in being role models when their families, especially children, are placed in danger.

The safety of the players, their families, and the spectators remains a top priority as Argentina and Colombia gear up for what promises to be an intense showdown on the field. It is hoped that security measures will be reinforced to ensure a peaceful and enjoyable conclusion to the Copa America.
