Rutgers University has taken the decision to hire a law firm to conduct a thorough investigation into allegations of bullying, favoritism, and revenge by the coach of the gymnastics program, Umme Salim-Beasley. The university has appointed Matthew Boxer, a partner at Lowenstein Sandler, to lead the investigation. The allegations came to light alongside the surprise retirement of Scarlet Knights Athletic Director, Pat Hobbs, citing health issues as the reason for stepping down.

Boxer, a former New Jersey state comptroller and federal prosecutor, is no stranger to investigating misconduct within Rutgers' athletic programs. In 2020, he conducted an investigation into the softball program following allegations of emotional abuse and abusive conditioning. Now, Boxer will delve into the claims made by seven former gymnasts and one current team member who described a "toxic" environment under Salim-Beasley's leadership.

Rutgers President, Jonathan Holloway, has emphasized the commitment to thoroughly reviewing all concerns raised about the gymnastics program. Holloway stated, "This effort will ensure that any and all concerns raised about the program have been thoroughly reviewed, determine whether appropriate follow-up steps were taken, identify reasons for any potentially insufficient responses, and recommend areas where additional steps may be necessary." The university aims to address any concerns about the team's culture that may arise during the investigation.

Holloway further affirmed that the recommendations from the investigation will be made public. The law firm will receive a $50,000 retainer fee and an initial rate of $225,000 for the first month, which will drop to $195,000 for the second month. Additional fees will be revisited only if further time is required to complete the review.

Holloway informed the university's governing boards on August 31 about the decision to initiate an external investigation. He expressed confidence in the university's application of its policies regarding the gymnastics program. He stated, "Our learning environment depends upon the safety, health, and mental well-being of all our students, and the university strives in every aspect of our operations to foster an environment where our students can thrive. Rutgers Athletics shares this commitment."

The allegations against Salim-Beasley come at a time when the issue of athlete welfare has garnered significant attention nationwide. This investigation is a demonstration of Rutgers University's dedication to ensuring the well-being and support of its student-athletes.
