In a surprising turn of events, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. issued a public apology on social media after a video of a phone conversation between himself and former President Donald Trump surfaced. Kennedy expressed remorse for not stopping the video recording, admitting that he was taken aback by the content of his discussion with Trump.
Kennedy explained that the call occurred while he was filming with an in-house videographer, and he deeply regretted that the video was subsequently shared online. In the video, Trump can be heard agreeing with Kennedy's discredited views on vaccines before attempting to persuade the independent candidate to endorse his campaign.
During their conversation, Trump also divulged details about his recent assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. He described the sensation of the bullet grazing his ear as feeling like "the world's largest mosquito." Trump further mentioned a subsequent phone call with President Biden, describing it as "very nice, actually."
Kennedy, while denying any intention of spoiling the election for Biden, expressed his belief that the current president's chances of defeating Trump in November were slim. In a previous presentation, Kennedy had asserted that if Biden were to withdraw from the race, he would be the best candidate for overcoming Trump.
Following a meeting with Trump on the morning of the Republican National Convention, Kennedy addressed rumors that they had discussed a unity ticket, emphasizing that the main topic of their conversation was national unity. He clarified that he also intended to meet with Democratic leaders to further discuss this matter.
Kennedy's son, Bobby Kennedy III, initially posted the video on social media before deleting it a few hours later. In his post, he expressed disappointment that Trump had not chosen a unity ticket and instead endorsed another candidate. Kennedy III also referenced the recent attempt on Trump's life and the former president's plea for Secret Service protection for his father.
The apology from Robert F. Kennedy Jr. comes amid heightened political tensions and speculation regarding the upcoming presidential elections. While the video has caused a considerable stir, it remains to be seen what impact, if any, it will have on both the Kennedy and Trump campaigns.
