In a marathon Utah Republican Party convention that stretched six hours past its scheduled end, incumbents found themselves fighting not just fatigue, but also formidable opponents. The convention results have set the stage for competitive primary races across various positions, as the battle for the Republican nominations intensifies.

The convention delivered a stunning blow to Governor Cox, as State Rep. Phil Lyman emerged victorious in the GOP delegate vote, securing an impressive 68% to 32% margin. While this result would have eliminated Cox from the race, his campaign's efforts to collect over 28,000 signatures allowed him to secure a place on the primary ballot. Now, Republican voters will decide between Cox and Lyman in the upcoming June 25th primary.

In the U.S. Senate race, Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs secured the convention's nomination with an overwhelming 70% of the vote. Staggs defeated a formidable array of opponents, including Congressman Jon Curtis, former Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson, serial business owner Jason Walton, and attorney Brent Hatch, son of the late Senator Orrin Hatch. However, despite Stagg's victory, Curtis, Wilson, and Walton managed to qualify for the primary by gathering the required signatures. As a result, the GOP race for U.S. Senate will now include four candidates, and it will ultimately be up to the voters to decide their preferred nominee.

Challenger Paul Miller surpassed Congressman Blake Moore by around 10% in Congressional District 1, setting the stage for an intriguing primary matchup between the two. In Congressional District 2, Congresswoman Celeste Maloy was bested by tech executive and former Green Beret Colby Jenkins, who had the endorsement of Senator Mike Lee. However, Jenkins's victory was not enough to secure the Republican nomination outright, and he will now face off against Maloy in the primary.

State Senator Mike Kennedy emerged as the convention winner in Congressional District 3, but he will face a formidable challenge from four opponents in the June primary. JR Bird, Case Lawrence, Stewart Peay, and John "Frugal" Dougall all managed to qualify for the primary through the signature path, setting the stage for a competitive race.

In the race to replace Sean Reyes as Utah Attorney General, Frank Mylar and Rachel Terry emerged from the convention, with Terry narrowly avoiding elimination. Alongside them, Derek Brown, who collected signatures, will also be on the primary ballot.

Overall, the Utah Republican Party convention showcased the intense competition within the party, with incumbents facing tough challenges from ambitious contenders. Now, it will be up to Republican voters to decide the fate of these races in the upcoming June primaries.
