In a surprising turn of events, prominent Republicans Adam Kinzinger and Ana Navarro are set to make appearances at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) this week in Chicago. Their participation comes as Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for Vice President, continues to receive support from Republicans, including former Republican Virginia Representative Barbara Comstock.

Adam Kinzinger, who served as Illinois's 16th congressional district representative from 2010 until his term ended in January 2023, is scheduled to speak at the convention on Thursday, coinciding with Kamala Harris's keynote speech. Kinzinger has been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump and notably voted to impeach him for "incitement of an insurrection" following the January 6 attacks on the Capitol. Last month, Kinzinger expressed his concerns about Trump's influence on the Republican Party, describing it as a "cult of personality."

On Tuesday night, Republican strategist and co-host of ABC's The View, Ana Navarro, will be hosting a segment of the convention. Navarro, a long-standing critic of Trump, shared on her Instagram account why she is supporting Kamala Harris. As a refugee who fled Nicaragua at a young age, Navarro sees Harris's nomination as a historic moment and an opportunity to stand up for freedom and opportunity.

The presence of Kinzinger and Navarro at the DNC follows the endorsement of Kamala Harris by several other Republican colleagues who share similar concerns about Trump's leadership. Former Republican congresswoman Barbara Comstock, in an interview with CNN, expressed agreement with Kinzinger's statements about Trump and his unsuitability for the Oval Office. Comstock cited Trump's alleged involvement in the events of January 6, as well as his past convictions, as evidence of his inability to be in a position of power.

The "Republicans for Harris" program, launched earlier this month by the Harris for President campaign, aims to engage Republican voters who reject the chaos and division propagated by Donald Trump. Kinzinger's endorsement of Harris is part of a growing list that includes notable names like former U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and former GOP state chair and state Senator Chris Vance of Washington.

The surprising support and participation of Republicans like Kinzinger and Navarro highlight the significance of the upcoming DNC. While they may not see eye to eye on all policy matters, these Republicans share a common belief in democracy and the importance of keeping Donald Trump out of the Oval Office.

Newsweek has reached out to Trump's team for comment on the growing support for Harris among Republican figures. As of Sunday, August 18, the publication has compiled a comprehensive list of Republicans endorsing Harris, signaling a potential shift in political alliances as the election draws closer.
