In the upcoming U.S. Senate race, Representative Colin Allred, a first-term Democrat serving Texas's 32nd district, is closely matched against Senator Ted Cruz, the incumbent Republican. Recent polling data shows Allred and Cruz in a tight race, with Allred gaining a slight lead over Cruz in some polls.
According to a Morning Consult poll conducted in September, Allred is currently leading Cruz by 1 point, garnering 45% compared to Cruz's 44%. Although it is still early in the race, Allred's progress is notable as he was previously trailing behind Cruz by a margin of 5 points in another poll. Cruz, who has held his Senate seat since 2013, is facing a competitive challenge from Allred in the red state of Texas.
Comparisons can be drawn to the 2018 Senate race between Cruz and Beto O'Rourke, where O'Rourke, a former Democratic Representative, came close to unseating Cruz. O'Rourke's national attention as the underdog, coupled with significant campaign contributions, highlighted the competitiveness of Texas politics. Despite his polling numbers being slightly better than Allred's at this point in the race, Cruz managed to secure a victory over O'Rourke in the 2018 election.
