In a recent social media post, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican known for her staunch right-wing views, made false claims about the signers of the Declaration of Independence, leading to widespread mockery and criticism.
On July 5, Greene took to social media to state that several Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence at a young age. However, her post quickly received a community note pointing out that six out of the eight figures she mentioned did not actually sign the historic document.
Greene's post, which garnered over 2 million views, 10,000 likes, and 6,500 comments by Monday morning, caught the attention of social media users who were quick to correct her inaccuracies. While figures like James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, James Monroe, Aaron Burr, Paul Revere, and George Washington played significant roles in the American Revolution, they did not affix their signatures to the Declaration of Independence.
One user humorously remarked that 75% of the signers listed by Greene did not sign the document, emphasizing the importance of education. Another user sarcastically claimed that Benjamin Franklin, incorrectly identifying him as the final signatory and President of the United States at the time.
Parody accounts also joined in the mocking, with a user impersonating a Republican representative suggesting that Greene had forgotten to include fictional characters like Johnny Appleseed and Paul Bunyan, as well as Ronald Reagan among the signers.
This is not the first time Greene has made dubious and false statements. She has repeatedly expressed skepticism about the events of the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, and has promoted conspiracy theories and misinformation about the 2020 election. Earlier this year, she referred to individuals involved in the Capitol riot as "political prisoners of war."
As the backlash continues to grow, Newsweek has reached out to Greene for comment, but has not received a response outside of normal business hours.
The incident reinforces the need for accurate information and highlights the potential consequences of spreading misinformation, especially among public figures.
