Former Florida State Quarterback, Marcus Outzen, Passes Away Due to Rare Immune Deficiency Disorder

In heartbreaking news, former Florida State University quarterback Marcus Outzen has tragically passed away at the age of 43. According to reports from The Tallahassee Democrat and his son, Colton, Outzen's death was a result of complications from a rare immune deficiency disorder.

Outzen had been diagnosed with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a condition that impairs the immune system's ability to function properly. This rare disease, as reported by Johns Hopkins, poses significant challenges for the affected individuals.

Known affectionately as "The Rooster" for his distinctive red hair and charismatic personality, Outzen played for Florida State University from 1996-2000. He rose to prominence during the 1998 season when he stepped into the starting quarterback role as a sophomore after Chris Weinke suffered a neck injury. It was Outzen who successfully led the Seminoles to victories over Wake Forest and Florida, earning them a spot in the national championship game against Tennessee.

Ultimately, Tennessee claimed the victory with a final score of 23-16, marking the first-ever Bowl Championship Series (BCS) title. Outzen's performance during the game included completing 9-of-22 passes for 145 yards, along with two interceptions. Nevertheless, he managed to score a crucial seven-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Outzen returned to a backup role for the next two seasons, supporting Weinke, including the 1999 season when Florida State emerged as national champions after defeating Virginia Tech, 46-29. Over the course of his career, Outzen completed a total of 72-of-121 passes for 1,077 yards, with five touchdowns and six interceptions.

The news of Outzen's passing has left the Florida State University community and his former teammates in deep sorrow. Remembered as a great friend and a beloved figure both on and off the field, Outzen's friendly nature made a lasting impact on those who knew him. His former teammate, Bobby Rhodes, expressed his sadness, stating, "Marcus was a good friend to a lot of people. People liked him, on and off the field. This is so sad."

A native of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Outzen resided in the Tampa area and worked in medical sales. Aside from his football career, he was an avid golfer, according to reports. Former teammate Barry Smith described Outzen's passion for Florida State, saying, "Marcus loved Florida State, a great family fan and so passionate. I am devastated for his wife and kids. Every time you saw him, he always had a great smile."

The sudden loss of Marcus Outzen has left the football community mourning, but his legacy as a talented athlete and a kind-hearted individual will forever be remembered.
