In a shocking revelation, undercover footage captured by Channel 4 has exposed party members of Reform UK making racist, homophobic, and Islamophobic comments while campaigning for the election of Nigel Farage as an MP. The remarks have drawn strong condemnation from the party, which has vowed to sever ties with those responsible.
During a campaign event, Farage acknowledged that some individuals had "said things they shouldn't have said" and would be dismissed as a consequence. However, he appeared to downplay the severity of the remarks, stating that in most cases, individuals were merely speaking like "ordinary folk." The undercover recordings also indicated that Reform UK may have breached the local electoral campaign spending limit in the constituency of Clacton.
The footage revealed alarming conversations, including one party canvasser advocating for shooting illegal migrants and another individual linked to the party referring to the Pride flag as "degenerate." Reform UK has stated that individuals making "unacceptable comments" will no longer be a part of Farage's campaign.
Specifically, a man identified as Andrew Parker, a Reform UK canvasser, was recorded using a racial slur to refer to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who is of Indian descent. Parker was also heard describing Islam as "the most disgusting cult out" and suggesting that army recruits should engage in "target practice" by shooting at small boats carrying illegal migrants. Furthermore, he told voters that Reform UK would be "kicking all the Muslims out of the mosques and turning them into Wetherspoons."
In another conversation, individuals identified as Rob Bates, a senior Reform UK campaigner, and two others linked to the party discussed the party's campaign spending. Bates was heard jokingly claiming that Reform UK had exceeded the legal spending limit, but clarified later that he was not responsible for campaign finances. The party has insisted that campaign spending is well within legal limits.
Additionally, another person linked to the party made homophobic comments, denouncing the Pride flag and suggesting that members of the LGBT+ community are pedophiles. He went on to criticize the police for attending Pride events and proposed the idea of transforming police officers into paramilitaries and reinstating the use of the noose.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, speaking at a party event in Boston, Lincolnshire, admitted that there were candidates who had made inappropriate comments, categorizing them as individuals who do not conform to mainstream political discourse. Farage emphasized that the party had taken action by dismissing those individuals. Richard Tice, chairman of the party, labeled the racist comments as "inappropriate" and stressed that such behavior was not reflective of the party's values.
Peter Harris, Reform UK's Campaign Manager in Clacton, expressed his profound disappointment and condemnation of the reported comments, asserting that they do not align with the party's principles.
BBC News is currently attempting to verify the identity of the individual responsible for the homophobic comments. The party has distanced itself from these remarks and hopes to address the matter.
Reform UK acknowledges that it is not a perfect party and that some members have let them down. However, they argue that compared to the alleged misconduct of other mainstream parties, their response demonstrates accountability and action.
The shocking revelations have sparked outrage among the public, with numerous calls for accountability and a thorough investigation into the matter. It remains to be seen how Reform UK will move forward from this controversy and regain the trust of the public.
