### Fertility Clinic Bombing in Palm Springs Sparks Reddit Subreddit Ban
An explosion at a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California, resulted in the death of one person and injuries to four others on Saturday morning. The FBI has classified the event as an act of terrorism. The lone fatality was the suspect, 25-year-old Guy Edward Bartkus, whose anti-human beliefs appear to have driven the attack.
Bartkus is believed to have detonated the bomb at the Palm Springs American Reproductive Center, a facility providing services such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). His views aligned with the pro-mortalist and anti-natalist movements, ideologies that oppose human procreation. Prior to the incident, Bartkus was active on various subreddits, including r/Efilism, a community advocating for violence, which has now been banned by Reddit.
A spokesperson for Reddit confirmed the ban to Gizmodo, emphasizing that the platform prohibits content encouraging or inciting violence. In response to the bombing, Reddit has removed the suspect's manifesto and is monitoring other communities for rule compliance.
The ideology of Efilism, often linked with anti-natalism, encourages the cessation of human procreation. Bartkus described himself as a pro-mortalist in his 30-minute audio manifesto, advocating for death as an ethical option to end suffering. His manifesto revealed personal struggles and incoherent justifications for targeting the fertility clinic.
Other anti-natalist communities on Reddit, such as r/circlesnip, have condemned the bombing, declaring their stance against violence and upholding individual reproductive autonomy. The moderator of these groups affirmed their commitment to non-violence and expressed hope for the clinic's recovery and continued operations.
A YouTube video from Gary Inmendham, who allegedly coined the term Efilism, also denounced Bartkus's actions, labeling them as senseless and counterproductive. Inmendham emphasized his opposition to both protests and terrorism.
The FBI's Assistant Director Akil Davis described the bomb's significant impact, marking it as one of the largest bombing scenes in Southern California. Recent concerns about Nihilist Violent Extremists (NVE) from the FBI highlight the dangers of ideologies advocating for widespread destruction, as exemplified by Bartkus's tragic and horrific actions.
