In the aftermath of intense battles between Israeli forces and Hamas militants, emergency workers have made a grim discovery in Gaza City. The bodies of approximately 60 Palestinians have been recovered from the Tal al-Hawa and Al-Sinaa districts. The Civil Defence Agency in Hamas-run Gaza reported that these bodies were found following the week-long offensive.
Sadly, the recovery efforts have been hindered due to the challenges faced by the rescue crews. According to Mahmud Bassal, spokesperson for the agency, there are still missing people trapped under the rubble of destroyed homes in areas that are difficult to access. Many reports have surfaced about people who have been missing since the incursion began.
Bassal expressed the agency's struggles, stating that despite numerous calls for help, they lack the resources to reach everyone in need. The situation is exacerbated by the destruction of the Sabha medical center in Gaza City's Shujaiya district, which had been providing crucial care to 60,000 residents.
Earlier this week, the Israeli army dropped leaflets cautioning residents of Gaza City, warning them that the area would remain a dangerous combat zone. The leaflets also outlined designated escape routes, urging people to flee. However, many civilians have expressed doubts regarding the safety of these corridors and fear leaving their belongings behind or being unable to return.
Meanwhile, negotiations for a ceasefire deal, supported by Arab mediators and the US, are ongoing. The aim is to secure the release of Israelis held hostage by Hamas in exchange for the release of Palestinians jailed by Israel. Unfortunately, Hamas believes that the heavy Israeli assault on Gaza City could jeopardize these talks just as they are reaching a critical stage.
The Palestinian militant group accused Israel of stalling and attempting to undermine the negotiations, a tactic it alleges has been employed in previous rounds of talks. The US, represented by National Security spokesperson John Kirby, expressed cautious optimism about the ongoing discussions in Egypt and Qatar. He acknowledged that there are still gaps between the two sides but believes they can be narrowed.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces opposition within his coalition government, has emphasized the importance of meeting all objectives before agreeing to a deal. This includes the ability for Israel to resume fighting if necessary.
As recovery efforts continue in Gaza City, the focus remains on providing aid to those affected while advocating for a resolution that will bring lasting peace to the region.
