A 35-year-old man from Raynham, Massachusetts, was fatally shot by police on Tuesday afternoon after he brandished a handgun at officers outside his apartment, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Thomas Quinn. The man has been identified as Stephen Maclean.
Quinn stated during a news conference that Maclean opened the door of his King Phillip Street apartment and pointed a firearm at the officers, prompting their response. One of the officers deployed a stun gun, while two others discharged their firearms. Maclean was later transported to the hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
This unfortunate incident occurred following Maclean's arrest on Monday for charges of intimidation of a witness and disorderly conduct related to an ongoing court case involving his girlfriend. Despite being on probation for operating under the influence, Maclean had been released after his court appearance.
Quinn highlighted the circumstances after Maclean's release, stating that multiple dispatches were made to his residence. On Tuesday, the police were called back following a report from Maclean's girlfriend about him going to his place of employment. It was revealed that Maclean had been fired and had returned home in an intoxicated state, prompting the authorities' involvement.
The officers who responded to the incident were equipped with body cameras, and the entire confrontation was recorded. Quinn mentioned that the footage clearly captured Maclean opening the door and pointing a firearm at the officers. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the case, emphasizing that Maclean's actions appeared to be unjustifiable.
The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty. As the investigation continues, authorities will evaluate the circumstances leading up to the encounter and the response of the officers involved, ensuring a careful review of the case.
Raynham residents and the entire community await further updates as the investigation progresses and more details emerge about the events that unfolded on King Phillip Street.
