**Majority of New York City Voters Want Mayor Adams to Resign, Poll Finds**
A recent poll from The New York Times and Siena College reveals that a significant majority of New York City voters want Mayor Eric Adams to step down. The data shows 53% of registered voters are calling for Adams’ resignation amid federal bribery and fraud charges, with only 26% approving of his job performance as mayor.
The poll highlights increasing concerns among Democratic voters about Adams’ chances of re-election. Only 12% of registered Democrats in the city would vote for Adams, compared to 22% for former Governor Andrew Cuomo and 19% for Attorney General Tish James, despite neither officially declaring a run. More alarmingly for Adams, only 15% of Black Democrats say they would re-elect him, while Cuomo and James received 23% and 21% support respectively from the same demographic.
The survey, which gathered input from 853 voters between late October, boasts a margin of error of approximately 4 percentage points. This is the second troubling poll for Adams in recent weeks, following a Marist College poll where 69% of adult residents sought his resignation shortly after his indictment.
Despite the low approval ratings and calls for his resignation, Adams has remained resolute in his commitment to stay in office. He addressed the situation on News 12's "Ask the Mayor," stating, "I've lived my life as a member of the law enforcement community, and I've always held myself to a high standard." He emphasized his readiness to face the inquiries and his dedication to his mayoral duties amidst the challenges.
Demographic splits in the poll suggest a cautious approach from Black Democrats, with 41% desiring Adams’ resignation. White voters were more decisive, with 61% advocating for his resignation, followed by Hispanic voters at 54%.
While Adams counts on support from the Black religious clergy and leaders like NAACP New York State Conference president Hazel Dukes, the poll indicates 52% of Black voters want him to complete his term, though a notable 41% would like him to resign. Cuomo and James are seen as front-runners among Black voters, with Cuomo securing 26% and James 21%.
Despite the majority calling for his resignation, less than half of voters (47%) favor his removal by Governor Kathy Hochul. The 2025 campaign landscape is still developing, with no other Democrats gaining significant traction. Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, City Comptroller Brad Lander, State Senator Jessica Ramos, former Comptroller Scott Stringer, and State Senator Zellnor Myrie are some of the potential contenders, but none have demonstrated significant momentum as of yet.
