In what promises to be a highly anticipated event, several prominent Democratic figures have been confirmed as speakers at the upcoming Democratic National Convention, according to sources familiar with the plans. The convention, scheduled to take place in Chicago from August 19-22, will see the likes of President Joe Biden, former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton deliver speeches to energize the party's base.
This year's convention holds special significance as it follows the unprecedented 2020 DNC, which was largely conducted virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Obama and the Clintons managed to captivate audiences with their impassioned speeches. Joining them as a representative for former President Jimmy Carter will be his grandson, Jason Carter, lending a multigenerational perspective to the event.
The convention comes on the heels of Biden's withdrawal from the race, following a disastrous June debate performance against former President Donald Trump. The fallout from the debate saw a decline in donations and some backers withdrawing their support for the president. However, the nomination process saw Vice President Kamala Harris emerge as the uncontested Democratic presidential nominee after Biden stepped down. She secured the majority of delegate votes during the virtual voting process earlier this month, making history as the first Black woman and first Indian American to secure a major party's presidential nomination.
The momentum leading up to the convention has been building since Harris announced her presidential campaign the previous month. Requests for entry into the main event space at the United Center and other convention-related events in Chicago have surged, indicating the heightened enthusiasm surrounding Harris and her campaign. To further bolster her campaign, Harris managed to raise a staggering $310 million last month, with an additional $36 million pouring in within 24 hours of announcing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate.
As the Democratic Party gathers in Chicago, all eyes will be on Harris as she formally accepts the party's nomination. The convention is expected to serve as a platform for Democrats to unite, rally their base, and present a unified front ahead of the crucial 2022 midterm elections. With a lineup that includes influential party figures and an unprecedented financial backing, the Democratic National Convention is poised to make a substantial impact on the country's political landscape.
