Progressives aligned with former Congressman Jamaal Bowman are reportedly strategizing for a potential comeback in the 2026 elections, following Bowman's defeat in the Democratic primary by Westchester County Executive George Latimer. The focus of their attention now turns towards a potential challenge to Representative Ritchie Torres, who currently represents the neighboring 15th district in the Bronx.

Team Bowman believes that Torres, the first openly gay Afro-Latino in Congress, could face a formidable challenge due to his representation of a much poorer area in the Bronx, where Bowman's socialist message is thought to resonate strongly.

Bowman's recent support for a Gaza ceasefire that would leave Hamas in power, as well as his public affiliation with individuals who celebrated the Oct. 7 massacre, led to a backlash among Jewish voters in the Westchester portion of his district. Despite this setback, Bowman overwhelmingly secured 84% of the vote in the Bronx section of his district during the primary.

In the final days leading up to the primary, Bowman, alongside socialist allies Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Bronx), held a rally in St. Mary's Park. Notably, this event took place miles outside of Bowman's district and in the heart of Torres' territory.

Bowman and Torres have had a contentious relationship, with the latter being one of the most staunchly pro-Israel Democrats in Congress. While Torres never officially endorsed Latimer, the two congressmen engaged in public sparring during the race, showcasing their evident disdain for each other. Bowman accused Torres of supporting Israel as a means to further his own political ambitions.

Speculation has arisen about Torres potentially eyeing the governor's mansion, although he has declined to comment on these rumors. Torres' allies, however, stand firmly behind him, asserting that his hold on the district is unassailable. They dismiss any potential challengers as mere "sour grapes," highlighting Torres' strong work ethic and popularity among constituents.

Additionally, Torres is expected to benefit from his substantial campaign war chest of nearly $10 million, as well as substantial financial support from pro-Israel allies and the backing of the Latino community.

As the 2026 elections loom in the distance, the possibility of a progressive challenge to Representative Ritchie Torres remains uncertain, yet sparks a renewed interest within the political landscape.
