With the first presidential debate just one week away, both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are intensifying their preparations for the highly anticipated clash in Atlanta on June 27.
According to senior campaign and administration officials, President Biden plans to work from Camp David for several days, possibly up to a week, for intensive debate preparations. Top campaign staff and White House advisers, including Ron Klain, Jennifer O'Malley Dillon, Cedric Richmond, and Mike Donilon, will join Biden at the presidential retreat for mock debates and policy discussions. The goal for Biden's team is to hold Trump accountable for his record and address the issues of reproductive rights, political violence, undermining democratic institutions, and his alleged affinity for billionaire donors.
While Trump and his team have traditionally downplayed formal debate preparations, they have been engaging in informal policy sessions to address likely debate topics. Trump has held discussions with various advisers, including Sen. JD Vance on the economy and inflation, former White House aide Stephen Miller and Tom Homan on immigration, and Ric Grenell on national security matters. Trump has also had discussions with Sens. Eric Schmitt and Marco Rubio in Washington.
The Trump campaign has maintained that his media interviews and rallies serve as sufficient preparation for debates, focusing on pushing Biden on his handling of immigration and the economy, which they perceive as weaknesses for the president. Trump is scheduled to hold a rally in Philadelphia on Saturday and attend a fundraiser with Sen. JD Vance in Cleveland on Thursday.
As the debate approaches, Biden faces challenges such as distilling information into concise answers, defending his record while looking forward, and fact-checking Trump. However, aides are confident that Biden will be prepared to respond to attacks and present a clear vision for the country.
CNN, the host of the debate, announced that Trump will have the final word after a coin flip determined podium placement and the order of closing statements. The Biden campaign won the coin toss and selected the right podium position. Both campaigns have planned their respective rapid response operations for the debate night, with a joint effort between the White House and Biden's campaign, as well as top surrogates present in Atlanta.
In light of the upcoming debate, Trump's allies and potential vice presidential hopefuls are set to join him in Atlanta. Those listed as attending include former HUD Secretary Ben Carson, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Senator Marco Rubio, and Representative Elise Stefanik, among others. The invitation also hints at potential post-debate remarks from Trump himself.
The stage is set for a high-stakes showdown as both presidential candidates gear up to present their visions for the nation and address the pressing issues facing the country. The first debate will be a crucial moment in their campaigns, making it an event not to be missed.
