In a significant decision, President Donald Trump has commuted the federal prison sentence of Larry Hoover, the infamous founder of the Chicago Gangster Disciples, according to his attorney. Hoover has been serving multiple life sentences in a Colorado prison, following convictions on charges including murder and federal crimes.

Attorney Jennifer Bonjean confirmed that Hoover is receiving clemency from the president, a move also verified by the White House. Though his federal sentences have been reduced, Hoover is still required to serve the remaining years of a 200-year state sentence for a 1973 murder in Chicago.

Hoover's notoriety in Illinois is underscored by a judge's description of him as one of the most dangerous criminals in the state's history. Despite this, his legal team has argued for his rehabilitation, a point which seemingly influenced President Trump's decision to commute his federal sentences. Hoover, now in his mid-70s, has spent years in incarceration, with federal authorities alleging that he continued to manage gang activities from behind bars.

The decision to grant clemency has not been without controversy. Ron Safer, the former lead prosecutor in Hoover's federal case, expressed his disappointment, suggesting that certain extreme crimes should be ineligible for mercy, no matter the circumstances.

While the commutation marks a dramatic turn in Hoover's federal imprisonment, he remains accountable for the state-level murder conviction, and it is anticipated that he will eventually be moved from Colorado to an Illinois state prison.
