### President Oaks Urges Followers of Christ to Embrace Peace Over Contention

In a powerful address during the 194th Semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, President Dallin H. Oaks, First Counselor in the First Presidency, emphasized the need for followers of Jesus Christ to shun contention and act as peacemakers.

President Oaks, speaking on Saturday, October 5, 2024, highlighted the significance of following Christ's teachings in an era marked by toxic communication and hostility. Drawing from biblical teachings, he urged his audience to love their enemies and bless those who curse them, noting that Jesus declared, "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God."

Addressing Latter-day Saints worldwide, President Oaks stressed that following Christ must be a lifelong commitment, guiding believers in all aspects of life. He used the metaphor of a kite held steady by a string to illustrate how covenants with God act as a stabilizing force, enabling individuals to reach celestial heights.

President Oaks also distinguished between permanent commandments, such as the doctrine of Christ, and temporary ones tailored to specific circumstances. He indicated that some enduring commandments might require renewed emphasis due to contemporary challenges, citing President Russell M. Nelson's push for the Church to be known by its official name.

Drawing attention to Jesus' teachings against contention, President Oaks noted that these principles were among the first lessons imparted to the Nephites. He related them to modern issues in politics, public policy, and family dynamics, where harsh words and hostility often prevail.

He concluded by reaffirming the call to be peacemakers, quoting President Nelson's recent counsel to embody this role. Advocating for the Golden Rule, President Oaks reminded members to treat others as they wish to be treated, emphasizing that this approach does not require compromising one's principles but rather communicating without harshness.
