President Joe Biden delivered a powerful commencement speech at the prestigious West Point military academy, emphasizing the role of newly graduating US military officers as "guardians of American democracy." Speaking to an audience of approximately 1,000 cadets, Biden warned of unprecedented threats to US freedom without directly mentioning former President Donald Trump by name.

During his speech, President Biden urged the graduating officers to uphold their military oath, reminding them that their loyalty is not to a political party or a specific president, but to the constitution of the United States of America. He stressed the importance of defending democracy and protecting key freedoms such as the right to vote, worship, and protest, emphasizing the need for constant vigilance.

Implicitly referring to the current political climate and the upcoming presidential election, Biden declared that the military oath is more significant than ever, considering the challenges democracy faces today. He stated, "Every generation has an obligation to defend it, protect it, preserve it - now it is your turn."

President Biden highlighted the unique global challenges that lie ahead for the graduating class of 2024, noting that the US military is facing multiple tasks in various locations simultaneously. He reaffirmed the United States' commitment to standing with Ukraine against Russian aggression but reiterated that no US troops would be deployed to the conflict.

Additionally, Biden commended the strength of the NATO alliance and praised the US military for their efforts in providing aid to Palestinians affected by the recent conflict in Gaza. The president also emphasized the nation's commitment to peace and stability in light of China's threat to Taiwan.

Notably, President Biden will participate in Memorial Day services at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia on Monday, following which he will travel to Normandy, France, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-day invasion. It is anticipated that Biden will use this occasion to deliver a significant speech on the heroism of Allied forces during World War II and the ongoing threats to democracy.

West Point, established in 1802 by President Thomas Jefferson, has a storied legacy of producing some of the United States' most renowned generals, including two who later became president. President Biden, who previously addressed graduating cadets twice during his vice-presidency, delivered his first commencement speech at West Point as the current president.

In terms of electoral support, data from NBC News indicates a slight decline in Trump's backing from the military community. While he won 60% of military voters in 2016, it dropped to 54% in 2020. Conversely, Biden's support among military voters rose to 44% in the most recent election.

The West Point commencement ceremony proceeded smoothly without any anticipated protests or disturbances, contrasting with some college campuses where students have demonstrated against President Biden's support for Israel's actions against Hamas.
