In a solemn Memorial Day speech at Arlington National Cemetery, President Joe Biden honored the nation's fallen troops and spoke about the importance of preserving their mission. Reminiscing about his own personal loss, Biden shared the grief he felt over the death of his son, Beau, who passed away from brain cancer.

As he laid a wreath at the military cemetery, the 81-year-old president emphasized that Americans have a responsibility to be the "keepers of their mission," ensuring that democracy endures. Biden acknowledged the pain felt by the families in attendance and highlighted the expansion of veteran health treatment under the PACT Act, which he signed into law in 2022.

Reflecting on his son's sacrifice, Biden recognized that while their losses may differ, the pain of losing a loved one is universal. He shared how Beau, a major in the US National Army National Guard, had developed cancer from exposure to a toxic burn pit during his service in Iraq. Biden expressed both the ongoing sharpness of the loss and the pride he feels in his son's service.

The president acknowledged the fallen heroes buried in Arlington as representatives of the generations of service members who fought in major conflicts throughout history. He emphasized their commitment to defending the nation's independence, preserving the union, defeating fascism, and building powerful alliances.

Looking ahead, Biden mentioned his upcoming trip to Normandy next month, where he will commemorate the US military's role in the liberation of Nazi-occupied France. He highlighted the bravery of American troops who "80 years ago next week took to the beaches of Normandy and liberated a continent, literally saved the world."

Biden stressed that freedom is not guaranteed and emphasized the ongoing battle between autocracy and democracy, as well as the fight against greed. He underscored the significance of democracy, stating that it is more than just a system of government; it is the very soul of America and the reason the country has flourished and adapted throughout centuries.

As the nation observed Memorial Day, President Biden's words served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women in uniform. His heartfelt tribute and call to preserve their mission resonated with the audience, uniting Americans in gratitude for the dedication and service of the fallen troops.
