President Joe Biden continues to express frustration towards certain members of his own party, including former President Barack Obama, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, according to sources familiar with Biden's thinking. Although Biden has acknowledged his decision to withdraw from the presidential race, he reportedly harbors some resentment towards those who, in his view, pushed him out of contention.

During a recent interview, President Biden publicly acknowledged Pelosi's role in encouraging him to step aside, stating, "She did what she had to do" in order to give Democrats the best chance of winning in November. Despite his lingering frustration, Biden has expressed grudging respect for Pelosi's actions, recognizing her commitment to the party over personal feelings.

The tension between Democratic leaders highlights the tumultuous period within the party over the past six weeks, contrasting with their hopes of presenting unity during their upcoming convention. Following a lackluster debate performance in late June, Pelosi became instrumental in orchestrating a mutiny against President Biden, a move that not only targeted a sitting president of her own party but also someone who had been a friend for decades.

White House spokesperson Andrew Bates emphasized President Biden's focus on delivering results for the American people, stating, "The President has spoken to his decision to put country above self and unite his party, as well as the stakes of this moment." Bates also highlighted Biden's attention on the future, rather than dwelling on past events.

One senior White House official, granted anonymity, described Pelosi as "ruthless" in her determination to keep the Democratic Party in power and prevent a potential return of former President Donald Trump to the White House. The official emphasized that this was a consistent characteristic of Pelosi, who has prioritized party interests over personal relationships.

Notably, President Biden and Speaker Pelosi have not spoken since Biden's departure from the presidential race, with tensions flaring during a recent televised interview where Biden addressed why he chose to withdraw from the contest.

Additionally, President Biden harbors some resentment towards former President Obama, who, despite their personal friendship, did not directly voice concerns about the campaign following Biden's disastrous debate performance in late June. While Obama publicly supported Biden on social media, he did not actively quell any movement to dislodge the president from the top of the ticket, leaving some of Biden's closest allies disappointed, according to sources familiar with their relationship.

The dynamic between President Biden and Speaker Pelosi has become increasingly complicated, with political tensions forming over the years. Despite their personal friendship, Biden has long believed that Obama's staff viewed him unfavorably, a sentiment shared by some of Biden's own aides. Furthermore, Biden was disheartened when Obama publicly expressed support for Hillary Clinton over him during the 2016 election.

However, it was Speaker Pelosi who played a decisive role in encouraging President Biden to withdraw from the race, according to Biden's allies. Her appearance on "Morning Joe" was seen as a significant turning point, leading other Democrats and donors to follow suit in expressing their concerns about Biden's candidacy.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized President Biden's respect for Speaker Pelosi, insisting there are no hard feelings between them. However, some senior White House aides privately expressed irritation when Pelosi publicly criticized the Biden political operation, despite its successful 2020 victory.

Despite her public stance of not calling anyone but President Biden in the weeks leading up to his departure, Speaker Pelosi did take calls from rank-and-file Democrats seeking advice following Biden's debate performance. She has since publicly praised the new Democratic ticket of Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who have experienced a surge in polls and revitalized their party.

As President Biden and Speaker Pelosi remain estranged, President Biden did speak with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on the day of his withdrawal from the race, according to a source familiar with their conversation. Although Biden has expressed less frustration towards Schumer, he was reportedly disappointed that the Senate leader, an institution he reveres, played a role in applying pressure, according to sources close to the president.

Senate Majority Leader Schumer responded to a request for comment by praising President Biden, stating, "We were all proud to work alongside him to achieve an historic legislative record that will leave him with an indelible legacy as president."

As the Democratic Party prepares for their convention next week, tensions between key leaders remain, despite their efforts to present a united front. The lingering resentment towards former President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Schumer underscores the complex dynamics within the Democratic Party during this historic period of tumultuous change.
