In a recent social media backlash, President Joe Biden has faced criticism and calls for impeachment from conservatives over a past anti-Trump tweet. Critics argue that Biden's decision to withhold some military aid from Israel due to his objection to their military campaign in Gaza mirrors the accusations made against former President Trump during his impeachment proceedings.

The controversy erupted after Twitter users resurfaced a tweet from 2019 in which Biden, then a candidate, stated that "President Trump withheld Congressionally appropriated aid to Ukraine unless they granted him a political favor." Biden labeled this as a "quid pro quo" and called for Trump's impeachment. Trump was ultimately impeached for "abuse of power" and "obstruction of Congress" regarding his dealings with Ukraine.

Conservatives quickly seized on the opportunity to highlight what they perceive as hypocrisy on Biden's part. Red State writer Bonchie posted, "Joe Biden endorses his own impeachment," while New York Post reporter Jon Levine called the tweet "newly relevant." Conservative communicator Steve Guest accused Biden of "withholding Congressionally appropriated aid to Israel unless they grant him a political favor."

Federalist co-founder Sean Davis echoed these sentiments, stating, "This is no joke - Biden continues to put his own personal, political interests ahead of the national interest. He must be impeached." Trump adviser Stephen Miller even suggested exploring ties between Biden aides and Iran, calling for a criminal investigation.

However, some have pushed back against the suggestion that Biden committed an impeachable offense. They point to a 2020 report from the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service, which states that the Arms Export Control Act of 1961 prohibits the sale or delivery of U.S.-origin defense articles if the recipient country has used them for unauthorized purposes. This provides a legal background for Biden's decision to withhold aid from Israel.

A White House official dismissed the accusations of hypocrisy as "ridiculous." They pointed out that senior administration officials had already made public statements aligning with the President's position on the military campaign in Gaza. They also clarified that the aid in question was a purchase made by a foreign government using its own funds, not funds appropriated by Congress.

Despite the White House's response, House Republicans disagreed, leading to the filing of articles of impeachment against President Biden. GOP Rep. Cory Mills accused Biden of abusing the powers of his office by soliciting a "quid pro quo" with Israel while leveraging military aid for policy changes. Mills argued that this compromised the credibility of the United States and undermined the interests of Israel.

Even members of Biden's own party expressed criticism. Democratic Rep. Ritchie Tores voiced suspicion that Biden may be "pandering to the far left" with his decision to withhold aid from Israel. Tores indicated that he believes election year politics may have influenced Biden's stance.

As the calls for impeachment grow louder, it remains to be seen how this controversy will impact President Biden's administration and the relationship between the United States and Israel.
