In a fiery speech on Tuesday, President Joe Biden launched a scathing attack on former President Donald Trump for his involvement in the recent Supreme Court decision overturning abortion rights, while also taking a swipe at Trump's latest money-making endeavor.
Referring to the Supreme Court case Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which resulted in the overturning of Roe v. Wade, President Biden sarcastically noted, "He described the Dobbs decision as a miracle. Maybe it's coming from that Bible he's trying to sell."
Trump has been promoting a $60 "God Bless the USA Bible," featuring the text of the Bible, Lee Greenwood's hit song "God Bless the USA," and additional patriotic texts such as the Pledge of Allegiance, the Bill of Rights, the U.S. Constitution, and the Declaration of Independence.
Amid laughter from the crowd, President Biden jokingly said, "Whoa! I almost wanted to buy one just to see what the hell's in it."
However, the Trump-endorsed Bible has been receiving poor reviews, with complaints of sticky pages. Nonetheless, the former president touted the Supreme Court's decision as a "miracle" and emphasized his role in achieving it.
Contrary to Trump's claims, President Biden asserted that the overturning of Roe v. Wade was not so much a miracle as a calculated move to secure support from evangelical voters. Trump had promised to appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn the decision if they voted for him despite his personal flaws.
Now, with three Trump-appointed justices forming a conservative majority on the Supreme Court, their decision in the Dobbs case has resulted in abortion bans being implemented in more than a dozen states, leading to widespread controversy and legal challenges.
"Trump bragged how proud he was to get rid of Roe v. Wade. He took credit for it," President Biden stated. "He said 'there has to be punishment' for women exercising reproductive freedom."
Trump's initial stance in 2016 supported the punishment of women who underwent abortions, although he later clarified that the focus should be on penalizing doctors who performed the procedure. This position has been reiterated as recently as this month.
President Biden's remarks took place during his campaign in Florida, where Democrats hope to mobilize voter anger over the restrictive abortion measures. The party aims to win back the state that Trump had previously secured in two consecutive elections, making it a key battleground for November.
As the debate over abortion rights intensifies, President Biden continues to advocate for women's reproductive freedoms while criticizing the actions and motives of his predecessor. With the Supreme Court's conservative majority now in place, the battle over the future of abortion access remains a contentious issue in US politics.
