In a strong statement, President Joe Biden denounced the baseless narrative circulating about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, abducting and consuming cats and dogs. Speaking out against former President Donald Trump, President Biden emphasized that such claims were "simply wrong" and had "no place in America."

The unfounded allegations gained traction over the past week, fueled by the rhetoric of former President Trump and his allies. Despite no evidence to support these claims, they persisted in spreading the hateful conspiracy theories.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, herself a Haitian-American, echoed the President's sentiments and expressed her deep concern about the dangers faced by the Haitian migrant community in Springfield. During a press briefing, she strongly condemned the vitriolic and smearing language used against vulnerable communities, emphasizing that there is no place for such rhetoric in political discourse.

Jean-Pierre also highlighted the ongoing support provided by the federal government to Springfield since spring. She mentioned the establishment of "one-stop clinics" that have served over 37,000 people in migrant communities across the country. While resources have been delivered to Ohio and other states, Jean-Pierre stressed the importance of additional funding from Congress to further assist these communities.

The press secretary blamed Congressional Republicans for obstructing bipartisan border legislation that would have allocated resources to places like Springfield. She revealed that the previous administration halted the bill, claiming it would hurt them politically. Jean-Pierre underscored the administration's commitment, stating they had already allocated more than $1.3 billion in grant funding to jurisdictions dealing with the influx, but further support was being blocked.

Reiterating the false nature of the claims, Jean-Pierre highlighted that the local police department had debunked the rumors. Haitian communities in Springfield find themselves living in fear, with parents keeping their children from school and facing threats to their property.

In response to the situation, Springfield Mayor Rob Rue assured residents that these rumors were "factually not true" and pledged that their pets were safe. The city released a statement confirming that there were no credible reports or specific claims of harm, injury, or abuse towards pets by individuals within the immigrant community.

President Biden, in solidarity with his press secretary and the Haitian-American community, condemned the attacks and labeled them as a smear and a hateful narrative. He stated unequivocally that there was no place for such unfounded claims in America.

It is crucial to address and dispel these harmful rumors in order to uphold the values of inclusivity, tolerance, and respect for all communities. The focus must shift towards supporting and assisting those in need, rather than perpetuating baseless accusations that only serve to deepen divides within society.
