In a move that could impact the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals, President Biden has unveiled a comprehensive federal action granting undocumented spouses of American citizens who have resided in the United States for at least a decade a new pathway to permanent residency and eventual citizenship. This plan aims not only to provide citizenship to approximately 500,000 qualifying spouses but also extend protection to around 50,000 children while shielding them from deportation during the process.
The announcement comes as the general election looms with less than five months remaining. Speaking exclusively to CBS News, Julie Chávez Rodríguez, Biden's campaign manager, emphasized the importance of the President's commitment to issues that matter to communities and families. She stated that eligible families can find solace in the fact that they now have an opportunity to remain together in the country, free from the fear of separation caused by harsh immigration policies.
Chávez Rodríguez also drew attention to the stark contrast between the actions taken by the Biden administration and those of former President Donald Trump. She recalled the distressing images of families being torn apart under the previous administration's family separation policies, highlighting the cruelty and chaos that ensued.
Meanwhile, in Racine, Wisconsin, on Tuesday, Donald Trump criticized the new immigration policy introduced by Biden. The former president referred to it as "one of Crooked Joe's most destructive moves" and promised to reverse it, should he be elected in November. Trump falsely claimed that Biden would grant a mass amnesty to millions of illegal aliens and expressed optimism that many would vote for him.
Although Biden secured the majority of Latino voters in the 2020 election, Trump has been making gains within the community. Recent polling by CBS News reveals that Biden's support among Latino voters has dropped by 12 points since 2020. Trump and his allies believe that a Hispanic vice presidential running mate could help further erode Biden's Latino support and potentially influence battleground states such as Nevada and Arizona, which have significant Latino electorates. Among Trump's potential choices for running mate, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida has emerged as a frontrunner, according to previous CBS News reports.
However, Chávez Rodríguez remains undeterred by the potential impact of a Latino vice presidential contender and believes that Trump's disdain for her community will not be concealed by any individual or campaign tactic. The battle for Latino support in the upcoming election continues to intensify as both candidates strive to appeal to this crucial voting bloc.
As the Biden administration forges ahead with its executive order, it remains to be seen how this bold move will shape the political landscape leading up to November. The President's decision has the potential to provide security and hope to thousands of families across the nation while drawing a clear distinction between his administration's approach to immigration and that of his predecessor.
