A recent post-debate poll conducted by YouGov has shed light on the viewers' perception of President Biden's performance during the Atlanta debate. The results reveal a clear advantage for former President Donald Trump, with a significant majority believing that he prevailed in the clash. These findings raise concerns for the Biden camp as they reflect a potential decline in support, particularly among key demographics and swing voters.

Out of 3,119 adults surveyed immediately after the CNN debate, a mere 22% thought that Biden emerged as the winner. In contrast, 43% believed that Trump carried the night, leaving 35% unsure of their opinion. This disparity stands in stark contrast to the ongoing discussions in the political sphere, contemplating the removal of Biden from the Democratic ticket.

Of particular concern for the Biden campaign is the gender split, as only 19% of women viewers thought that Biden came out on top. This lack of female support is troubling for Democrats, who heavily rely on strong turnout from women voters, especially on issues such as reproductive rights, which have been central to this year's political discourse.

Interestingly, 47% of Democrats thought that Biden outperformed Trump, while only 16% believed the opposite. However, the crucial group of independent voters largely favored Trump, with a mere 13% believing that Biden won, compared to 40% who perceived Trump as the victor. Republicans overwhelmingly supported Trump, with 77% backing him compared to just 7% for Biden.

The poll also highlighted concerns regarding Biden's age, as voters over the age of 45, who tend to be high-propensity voters, expressed significant skepticism about his performance. Only 18% of those aged 45 to 64 and 19% of those over the age of 65 saw Biden as the winner. However, there is a glimmer of hope for Democrats as around a quarter of respondents under the age of 45 viewed Biden as the winner.

Ethnically, every group surveyed saw Trump as outperforming Biden, although Biden fared relatively better with black respondents, with 25% believing he won compared to 31% for Trump. On the other hand, white people and Hispanics were of the opinion that Trump prevailed by more than a 2-to-1 margin.

Regionally, respondents in the South and Midwest perceived Biden as particularly underwhelming, with only 20% and 21%, respectively, believing he won the debate. His strongest regional showing was in the Northeast, where 27% thought he emerged as the winner.

The YouGov survey findings align with other post-debate polls, including a CNN flash poll where 67% of debate watchers thought Trump delivered a better performance. Additionally, a poll conducted by J.L. Partners for the Daily Mail concluded that 68% believed Trump came out on top, even among 30% of people who voted for Biden in 2020.

In terms of perceived fitness for presidency, the poll uncovered unease among Democrats, with only 74% of them believing Biden to be more fit than Trump. In contrast, 86% of Republicans considered Trump more suited for the role. Independents also leaned towards Trump, with 41% believing he was more fit compared to 26% for Biden.

As a consequence of his lackluster performance, Biden's odds in the presidential prediction markets have decreased significantly. At present, Trump stands at 64%, while Biden lags behind at just 19%. Vice President Kamala Harris and former First Lady Michelle Obama received respective percentages of 5% and 4%.

Despite the Biden campaign's attempts to spin the narrative in their favor, citing a "survey of undecided voters in a Midwest state," Team Trump has seized on Biden's underwhelming performance. They argue that his inability to defend his record and articulate clear plans for the economy and border security reinforces his unsuitability for the presidency.

Furthermore, the campaign criticizes Biden for taking a week-long vacation at Camp David while 50 ISIS terrorists were allegedly on the loose, questioning his competence to handle such challenges. Trump's supporters argue that if Biden is unable to handle a debate, he is incapable of fulfilling the role of president.

In conclusion, the YouGov poll clearly indicates Biden's struggle in the Atlanta debate, with Trump being widely regarded as the winner. The results underscore challenges for the Biden campaign, particularly among women voters, swing voters, and older demographics. These findings will undoubtedly impact the Democratic strategy as they navigate future debates and attempt to regain momentum in the race for the presidency.
