**President-Elect Donald Trump and Vice-President Kamala Harris to Meet Amid Republican Gains**

President-Elect Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with current Vice-President Kamala Harris in the Oval Office on Wednesday, marking their first meeting since the recent election. This significant political encounter comes as Trump gears up to resume office at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

Meanwhile, Republicans edge closer to securing a majority in the House of Representatives, although the final count is still underway. The GOP has successfully regained control of the Senate, and taking the House as well would afford them substantial leverage in implementing Trump's policy agenda.

In light of Trump’s imminent return, pressing questions arise regarding defense spending and international security. A UK source highlighted concerns about relying on a few thousand votes in Pennsylvania to determine Europe's defense interests, particularly since Trump is less inclined to finance other countries' defense mechanisms.

The UK government is contemplating an increase in defense spending to 2.5% of GDP, a target last met in 2010. This ambition requires the completion of a defense review and a comprehensive spending review in Whitehall, both anticipated next spring. Despite an additional £3bn being allocated to defense in the recent Budget, former ministers argue that it remains insufficient for long-term planning.

Adding a historical twist to the election, Kamala Harris, as vice-president, will be responsible for certifying Donald Trump's presidential victory. As president of the Senate, Harris will preside over the technical process of receiving and counting electoral ballots, a role that traditionally formalizes the transition of presidential power. Notably, she will follow in the footsteps of Al Gore, who certified George W. Bush's presidency in 2000 after a prolonged Florida recount.

Also noteworthy, former Republican Senator Kelly Ayotte has been elected governor of New Hampshire. Her election contributes to a new record in the United States, with a total of 13 female governors now serving across the country.
