The Lincoln Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into a tragic car crash that occurred in southeast Lincoln on Sunday, resulting in the loss of two lives. The incident took place in the vicinity of S. 28th Street and Pine Lake Road just before 5:45 a.m.
According to information provided by the Lincoln Police Department (LPD), the crash involved a single vehicle with three male occupants, all residents of Lincoln. Initial findings suggest that a Honda Pilot was traveling west on Pine Lake Road at a high rate of speed. The vehicle veered off the north side of the road, flipped over, and collided with a tree. The impact caused one of the passengers, a man, to be ejected from the vehicle, resulting in his immediate death at the scene.
Another passenger, a 23-year-old man, also tragically lost his life in the crash. The driver, a 34-year-old man, sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. At present, the authorities have opted to withhold the identities of those involved pending notification of their next of kin.
Based on the initial investigation, the Lincoln Police Department suspects alcohol to be a contributing factor in the crash. Consequently, charges are anticipated to be filed against the driver responsible for the incident.
To facilitate the ongoing investigation, a section of Pine Lake Road from 28th to 32nd streets will remain closed until law enforcement authorities conclude processing the scene. Commuters are advised to seek alternative routes while the closure is in effect; however, access to the nearby shopping center will still be possible.
In their efforts to gather more information about the crash, the LPD has appealed to any witnesses who may have observed the incident or captured video footage. Individuals with relevant information are urged to contact the police at 402-441-6000. Alternatively, those who wish to remain anonymous can reach out to Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.
