In a shocking turn of events, a plastic surgeon in Florida has been arrested over the death of his wife, who suffered a cardiac arrest while on his operating table. Benjamin Brown, 41, was taken into custody on Monday on charges of second-degree felony homicide: manslaughter by culpable negligence.
The incident took place at Brown's practice, Restore Plastic Surgery, located in Gulf Breeze, Florida, on November 21. According to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a medical emergency involving Hillary Ellington Brown, 33, who went into cardiac arrest during a surgical procedure. She was immediately rushed to a hospital where she was put on life support. Sadly, she passed away seven days later.
An autopsy is currently pending to determine the exact cause of Hillary Brown's death. Nonetheless, Benjamin Brown turned himself in to the police on Monday, after a warrant was issued for his arrest on Friday.
The state report revealed that on the day of the incident, Hillary Brown was scheduled to undergo multiple procedures, including miniature muscle plication/abdominal scar revision, bilateral arm liposuction, lip injections, and ear adjustment. Shockingly, it was stated that she prepared her own anesthesia, but failed to document what she took. Additionally, she ingested a mixture of multicolored pills, including Valium.
According to the report obtained by WEAR-TV, Benjamin Brown administered additional anesthesia to his wife without being able to verify what she had already taken. He also failed to record her medication and dosage. As the procedures progressed, Hillary Brown experienced symptoms related to sedation, including blurred vision, restlessness, muscle twitching, and confusion.
Despite her deteriorating condition, Benjamin Brown continued injecting drugs into his wife's face, as per the report. It was only after she became unresponsive and started seizing that a medical assistant inquired about calling 911. Shockingly, Brown initially denied the request.
Subsequently, as time passed, Brown's wife's breaths became shallow, her pulse weakened, and her oxygen levels dropped significantly. Only then did Brown instruct his employees to call for emergency assistance. However, it took approximately 10 to 20 minutes for the call to be made.
As the investigation continues, it has been revealed that Benjamin Brown has been licensed to practice medicine in Florida, Washington DC, Virginia, and West Virginia. He holds certifications from the American Board of Plastic Surgery and graduated from Georgetown University's Department of Plastic Surgery in 2015.
Family members of the deceased have expressed their devastation and outrage over the incident. Marty Ellington, Hillary Brown's father, lamented the actions of "one careless individual" and stated that Ben Brown's ego and arrogance overshadowed the need for help, leading to oxygen deprivation and ultimately causing her death.
In response to the incident, Florida's Department of Health has issued an emergency order restricting Benjamin Brown's medical license. He is now only permitted to perform procedures or surgeries in a licensed hospital under the supervision of a licensed physician. The department is pursuing disciplinary action against him, and the case will be heard by the Division for Administrative Hearings.
Furthermore, the department's probe into Brown's practice revealed allegations of unwanted procedures, including Brazilian butt lifts, and allowing his unlicensed wife to perform procedures on patients. Disturbingly, patients have come forward claiming disfigurement and chronic pain resulting from their experiences at Brown's practice.
As this tragic case unfolds, the spotlight is now on the implications of medical malpractice and the need for stringent regulations to ensure patient safety and prevent such devastating incidents in the future.
