A tragic incident unfolded on Monday afternoon as a small plane crashed into the Merrimack River in Methuen, Massachusetts, leaving the pilot believed to be deceased, according to local fire officials. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that a single-engine Van's RV-6A aircraft plunged into the river around 2:15 p.m.
Authorities have reported that only the pilot was on board at the time of the crash. The identity of the pilot has not been disclosed, pending notification of next of kin. North Andover Deputy Fire Chief Graham Rowe expressed his belief that the pilot did not survive the crash.
Dive teams from Salem and Beverly have been called upon to assist in recovery efforts. The exact circumstances that led to the plane ending up inverted in the river, between North Andover and Methuen, remain unclear. Additionally, the extent of the pilot's injuries, if any, is yet to be determined. The crash site is in close proximity to Lawrence Municipal Airport, from which the ill-fated plane took off before losing contact with the control tower shortly before the incident occurred.
First responders were observed gathered on the riverbank, utilizing a North Andover Fire Department boat to access the inverted plane. Fortunately, fire officials have stated that the aircraft appears to be largely intact.
Emergency crews from North Andover, Lawrence, and Methuen quickly mobilized to the scene. Initially, there was confusion regarding the precise location of the crash, with early reports suggesting Lawrence as the site. However, it has since been determined that the plane crashed on the Methuen side of the river.
In the aftermath of the incident, both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will conduct thorough investigations into the crash. The NTSB will lead the investigation and will provide any updates as the inquiry progresses.
This unfortunate accident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with aviation, and our thoughts are with the pilot's loved ones during this difficult time.
