In a recent survey conducted by Pew Research Center, it was found that both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are widely viewed as flawed candidates for the 2024 presidential election. Additionally, the survey highlighted voters' dissatisfaction with their choices for president.
The survey, which took place from July 1-7, involved 9,424 adults, including 7,729 registered voters, who are members of Pew's American Trends Panel. It aimed to understand Americans' perception of the 2024 presidential campaign and their views on the leading candidates.
One of the key findings of the survey is that a significant number of voters describe both Biden and Trump as "embarrassing." Roughly 6 in 10 voters hold this view, indicating a widespread disillusionment with the options available.
Concerns about Biden's mental sharpness have also come to the forefront. Only 24% of voters believe that the phrase "mentally sharp" describes Biden well, a decline of 6 points since January. In contrast, more than half of the voters (58%) perceive Trump as mentally sharp.
The survey also delved into voter preferences. It revealed that if the election were held today, Trump would hold a lead over Biden among registered voters, with 44% vouching for Trump and 40% supporting Biden. However, a notable 15% expressed their support for third-party candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
The analysis of voter demographics further observes that Trump has greater support among voters aged 50 and older, while Biden enjoys a wider advantage among voters under 30. The survey also highlights differences in candidate preference among racial and ethnic groups, with Trump leading among white voters and Biden leading among black voters.
Moreover, the survey shed light on the overall dissatisfaction with the 2024 campaign. Respondents expressed that the campaign did not make them feel proud of the country (87%), was not focused on important policy debates (76%), and was too negative (68%).
Interestingly, despite their differing opinions on the candidates, both Trump and Biden supporters expressed dissatisfaction with the choices available. However, Trump supporters showed slightly more satisfaction compared to Biden and Kennedy supporters.
A noteworthy trend emerged among Biden supporters who expressed a growing desire to replace both Biden and Trump on the ballot. 53% of Biden supporters favored this option, an increase from 49% in April. Conversely, Trump supporters showed less inclination to replace both candidates, with 26% favoring this option, down from 35% in April.
The survey also explored voter engagement and perceptions of the candidates' conduct, mental sharpness, and honesty. Biden's ratings for mental sharpness have declined since the 2020 campaign, while Trump's ratings have increased. However, Biden's rating for honesty remains consistent, as does Trump's.
Overall, the Pew Research Center survey provides valuable insights into the views of voters regarding the 2024 presidential campaign. It underscores the widespread dissatisfaction with the choices for president and sheds light on the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the leading candidates.
