In a turnaround decision, the Cumberland Valley School District in Pennsylvania has voted to allow actor and children's book author Maulik Pancholy, who is openly gay, to deliver a speech against bullying during a May 22 assembly at Mountain View Middle School. The board's vote came after a strong outcry from residents, including more than a dozen students, who spoke out against the cancellation of Pancholy's appearance.

The controversy began on April 15 when the school board unanimously canceled Pancholy's talk, citing concerns about his activism and "lifestyle." Some board members also referred to a policy against hosting overtly political events, which was implemented after criticism for hosting a Donald Trump rally during his 2016 presidential campaign.

However, many community members expressed their disagreement with the cancellation, particularly highlighting the hurtful message it sent to the LGBTQ+ community. Superintendent Mark Blanchard and other district leaders also voiced their support for Pancholy's speech in a letter to the board, faculty, and staff, arguing that it was essential to reinforce the importance of treating all people equally.

Education officials further revealed that the board did not give them a sufficient opportunity to address questions or provide guidance about the event. They emphasized that Pancholy's speech was intended to promote inclusivity and equality for all individuals.

Maulik Pancholy, known for his roles in popular television shows like "30 Rock" and "Weeds," as well as his work as a children's book author, expressed gratitude for the community members who supported him. He acknowledged the immense courage shown by every student who spoke out at the board meeting and thanked them for their powerful messages of love, inclusion, respect, and belonging.

Pancholy's appearance was originally scheduled by the school's leadership team, which annually selects an author to provide a unique educational experience for students. While some board members claimed they were unaware of the content of Pancholy's speech, Bud Shaffner raised concerns about the actor's activism and "lifestyle," stating that it should not be imposed upon students at any age.

In response to the initial board vote, Pancholy took to social media to explain the significance of representation in literature, sharing his own experiences as a middle school student. He emphasized the need for stories featuring South Asian-American and LGBTQ+ characters, which were absent during his adolescence. Pancholy wrote that his school visits aim to let young people know they are seen and that they matter.

With the decision to reinstate Maulik Pancholy's speech, the Cumberland Valley School District has taken a step toward inclusivity and understanding, recognizing the importance of representation and addressing issues of bullying within their community.
