In a fiery exchange on social media, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro accused Donald Trump of promoting antisemitism after the former president referred to him as a "highly overrated Jewish Governor." The contentious remarks from Trump came in response to Shapiro's support for Vice President Kamala Harris, which Trump claims is misguided due to her alleged hostility towards Israel.

Calling out the derogatory nature of Trump's language, Shapiro condemned the Republican nominee for consistently peddling antisemitic tropes. The Democratic governor, who leads a crucial swing state in the presidential contest, expressed his belief that Trump is fixated on perpetuating hate and division in politics.

Trump's tweet, posted after midnight on Thursday, took aim at Shapiro's backing of Kamala Harris' bid for the White House. Trump falsely asserted that Harris "hates Israel" and criticized Shapiro's speech at the Democratic National Convention, referring to it as "really bad and poorly delivered." Trump also falsely claimed to be the best friend Israel and the Jewish people have ever had.

The White House swiftly condemned Trump's remarks, classifying them as antisemitic, dangerous, and hurtful. White House spokesman Herbie Ziskend emphasized the importance of refraining from attacking fellow Americans based on their religious beliefs. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, he added, are committed to uniting Americans against any form of bigotry and antisemitism.

In response to the backlash, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung defended the former president's statements, accusing Kamala Harris of attempting to appease Hamas sympathizers and criticizing the Democrats for enabling antisemitic protests on college campuses. Cheung emphasized Trump's support for Israel and highlighted his administration's achievements in brokering diplomatic agreements in the Middle East.

The Harris campaign has not yet responded to Trump's post.

Beyond the allegations of bigotry, Trump's attack on Shapiro has been seen as a potential political misstep. Observers argue that such rhetoric could alienate crucial Jewish voters in Pennsylvania, a must-win swing state in presidential elections.

Governor Shapiro, a rising star within the Democratic Party, has consistently received high approval ratings during his tenure. He was even considered as a potential running mate for Vice President Kamala Harris before she ultimately selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Trump's assertions about Harris' alleged dislike of Jewish people have been a recurring theme in his campaign rhetoric. He has also claimed that individuals of Jewish faith who support the Democratic party do not genuinely support Israel.

Shapiro, in his response, emphasized that his speech at the Democratic National Convention was centered on inclusivity, unity, and acceptance. He denounced Trump's divisive rhetoric, stating that it contradicts the core values he believes in. Shapiro concluded by suggesting that Trump's history and divisive approach would ultimately lead to another defeat for the former president.

As the election season heats up, the clash between Trump and Shapiro highlights the contentious nature of politics and underscores the importance of addressing prejudices and promoting unity.
