Shapiro, who made headlines for leading an investigation into sexual abuse by members of the Roman Catholic Church, is weighing his options as the Democratic primary approaches.

Shapiro's tenure as attorney general has been marked by significant achievements, most notably his office's release of a report alleging over 1,000 cases of child molestation by more than 300 priests since the 1940s. However, political strategist Samuel Chen of the Liddell Group believes Shapiro's relatively short political experience could pose challenges, though less pronounced compared to other potential candidates like author J.D. Vance.

While Shapiro's resume boasts notable credentials such as attending Yale Law School and serving as Pennsylvania's attorney general, he is not yet a household name. In contrast, Vance gained widespread recognition through his best-selling book, "Hillbilly Elegy," which struck a chord with conservatives. The appeal of a non-traditional politician like Vance, coupled with voter dissatisfaction towards established figures, could play a role in the upcoming election.

Chen suggests that Shapiro's shorter political tenure might be an advantage as longer-serving politicians often accumulate blemishes that could impact their campaigns. However, Shapiro himself has faced scrutiny for accepting gifts from donors, including courtside seats to Philadelphia 76ers games, which his campaign labeled as "political meetings."

If Shapiro were to secure the Democratic nomination and win the governorship, he would become the highest-ranking Jewish politician in American history. Chen believes this could attract the support of Jewish voters who have felt disaffected by the Democratic party's stance on issues related to Israel and Gaza.

Should Shapiro decide to leave his current role as attorney general before his term ends, Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis would assume leadership. Pennsylvania's line of succession indicates that Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward, a Republican from Westmoreland County, would become lieutenant governor, breaking the tradition of the governor and lieutenant governor being from the same party.

The potential candidacy of Shapiro comes as President Joe Biden announced that he would not run for a second term as the Democratic Party's nominee. In response, Shapiro expressed his admiration for President Biden, highlighting his service and leadership in various roles. However, Shapiro made no reference to his own political aspirations in the tweet.

As the political landscape in Pennsylvania takes shape, voters will closely watch the upcoming gubernatorial race, anticipating the entry of candidates like Josh Shapiro and their platforms to navigate the challenges facing the state.
