The New England Patriots returned to the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium on Thursday morning for their second straight day of practice, and it was a notable session for several players.
First-round rookie quarterback Drake Maye had a standout performance, despite not airing it out like he did on Wednesday. Maye showcased his skills by delivering some impressive throws, including a perfectly placed pass to Ja'Lynn Polk over the middle on his lone downfield attempt. Maye exhibited quick decision-making and efficiency in the short game, going through his reads and taking what the defense gave him. After practice, he dedicated extra time to work one-on-one with rookie wide receiver Javon Baker.
On the other hand, fellow rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe saw a shift in his position on the depth chart. Zappe, who was initially the third-string quarterback, seemed to have been surpassed by rookie sixth-rounder Joe Milton. This unexpected change raises questions about Zappe's future role in the team and warrants further observation during future practices.
Wide receiver Tyquan Thornton bounced back from a quiet first day of camp, making his presence felt on Thursday. Thornton emerged as a standout performer, leading all receivers with five catches in team drills. With four passes coming from Jacoby Brissett and another from Maye, Thornton demonstrated excellent route-running skills, including a notable win on a curl route against cornerback Christian Gonzalez. Though he experienced a miscommunication play with Maye, Thornton had a solid overall performance and anticipates a greater test when pads are introduced next week.
Offensive lineman Atonio Mafi, who struggled in his rookie season, faced increased competition following the Patriots' investment in the interior offensive line. Unfortunately, Mafi failed to impress in his role at center during Thursday's practice. He encountered a snapping issue with Joe Milton, which highlights his struggle to meet the demands expected of him amidst heightened competition.
Tight end Jaheim Bell also had a mixed performance. As a lower-level player, Bell aimed to seize opportunities with the first- or second-string offense. While he dropped a pass from Maye, he redeemed himself by making a good catch on a throw from Milton. Bell must continue to capitalize on chances to secure his position on the team.
In the defensive department, cornerback Marcus Jones stole the spotlight with an impressive play against Jacoby Brissett. Jones broke up a pass intended for Ja'Lynn Polk during 11-on-11 drills, exhibiting great competitiveness at the catch point. Additionally, Jones showcased versatility by participating in punt return duties and even engaging in a wide receiver drill alongside Christian Gonzalez.
There were also notable moments involving offensive tackles Vederian Lowe, Calvin Anderson, and Caedan Wallace. These players encountered difficulties against New England's pass rush, although practicing without pads may have contributed to their challenges. Furthermore, Jabrill Peppers made a highlight-worthy play as he successfully broke up a pass intended for Hunter Henry.
The Patriots will continue their practices on Friday, marking their third practice of the summer. Fans can expect gates to open at 10 a.m. ET, with practice commencing at 11 a.m.
